You’re Doing It Wrong

eye

Quit counting fans, followers and blog subscribers like bottle caps. Think, instead, about what you’re hoping to achieve with and through the community that actually cares about what you’re doing.” – Amber Naslund

It is not about the numbers. It is about what you do with the numbers you do have. If you have 5,000 friends and followers but you don’t bother to personally interact with them, you are wasting your time. Yeah, you really do have to actually socialize with real people. [insert gasp here] Who would have thought?

If social media isn’t fun, you’re doing it wrong.”

People WANT to talk. They WANT to feel connected, to feel a part of something, and above all to feel like they fit in, they belong. By simply filling that need, you are able to accomplish so much more than you ever dreamed possible. Think about it, part of your business is just having fun socializing with others. How cool is that?

Now hold off a second before you get too excited about this concept.

People are smart. They know when you are interacting with them simply because you want something out of them. It simply doesn’t work that way. You cannot fake sincerity. You are either sincere or you are not.

This all goes back to the old saying that I keep trying to pound into your head.

People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.” John Maxwell

If you don’t genuinely care about others, you might want to considering delegating your social media chores to someone else because the truth is, if social media isn’t fun, you’re doing it wrong.

Ya want one last tip?

Yes?

A big part of interacting with others is truly listening to what they have to say.

It absolutely amazes me how people forget the SOCIAL part. If you wouldn’t do, be or say it in a “in real life” social situation, it doesn’t belong in social media. Just because we are connected digitally doesn’t mean you can just blurt something out and walk away. When done right, participating in social media brings JOY to the poster and the reader because you’re both enriching each others’ experiences in some way – just like meeting people in real life. Thanks, this needed to be said!

I couldn’t agree more. I am a bit of a social butterfly online yet in person it takes a while for me to warm up. I do love being able to network online but first and foremost its the social interaction I get on places like Facebook and Forums that I really enjoy.

    Great post Cricket and Karen

Exactly! I tell my clients all the time that the number of people following is not that important but they need to be engaging those who are and not just promoting their business. Thanks for this great post.

You won’t get any more out of it than you choose to put into it. ;)

What I feel is social media is a great way to know what your users feel about you and what they expect from you. Many of the site owners are now buying the followers on these social sites who are mostly no interest in their niche. So the relevancy is equally important otherwise its pointless to have thousands of followers but of them all hardly anyone cares what you are saying.

I agree with you people are now smart and they know if you are connecting with them only for selling some thing. Selling something once a while is not bad but it should be made sure that you don’t only connect with the people when you have something to sell. You can connect with them when you have something useful to offer which would interest them, like some cool free stuff etc.
