Allen - spot on. Ranking is a terrible metric, in isolation.

You'd be surprised what some agencies charge to provide clients this "information"...

Thanks Dave.

I agree. Outsourcing can often be a lot more cost effective, and some SEM agencies are worth every cent. And more.

My article is mainly aimed at the do-it-yourself guy/girl who may be intimidated by these big agencies. They needn't be.

Pete,

I'd entirely agree with the sentiments expressed above.

But while the client company is doing SEO in house why don't they do their own TV advertising, direct mail, public relations and sponsorship programmes. And why stop there? Why don't they do all their own IT, HR, engineering, logistics, legal etc, etc etc.

Then your average firm would only need to employ three times the number or staff.

I spoke at a conference 4 weeks ago. A member of the audience said she didn't need firms like mine becuase she already had 4 in house staff doing pay per click advertising and was about to hire a 5th. I check out her site, it didn't even register in the top 200 organic rankings for Google.co.uk!!!! Would any of the pay per click employees tell her this. Of course not.
