Google To Introduce Online Spreadsheet

I wonder how Microsoft execs sleep at night.

Although it’s still considered a work in progress, Google’s online spreadsheet will offer consumers and businesses a free alternative to Microsoft’s Excel application – a product typically sold as part of the Office software suite that has been a steady moneymaker for years

It is difficult to compete with free, especially when you make most of your money selling Office.

Not that Microsoft are going anywhere soon – they own the enterprise space, an area in which Google haven’t made significant inroads. And while home users may willingly surrender some control to third-parties, business is far less likely to do so.

Still, this is yet another small cut…

I agree with what your saying here, but I think it will be a bigger chunk than you think. I deal with a lot of small businesses, that only have computers because they have too. And the majority of these businesses run some sort of office product, such as excel.

Having a choice for free to these small businesses will be a lifesaver. Honestly, they could do without, but the market demands that they have it. So, instead of shelling out the $$$ for office they will download this.

I think it’s great! Microsoft needs to start cutting prices on some of their junk anyways. But, support will be required and laying in beta for 10yrs won’t cut it.

I suspect you’re right there, Chris. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Another vector: Students. If students get used to a certain way of doing things, they eventually take their methods and software into the workplace. That’s the door for Google into the enterprise space.
