Wikipedia Spin

From Dave Winer:

The comment thread that followed Nick Carr’s piece about Wikipedia illustrates the mistake of the most zealous Wikipedia advocates, they fail to set expectations accurately, and then, when someone like Carr takes their hype at face value, they attack him for not knowing how Wikipedia really works.

Again, I like Wikipedia – yardy yar – but I agree with Dave and Nick. The zealots are all-too-quick to circle the wagons when they sense they’re being attacked. As Dave rightly points out, “it’s anti-intellectual”. It’s certainly self-defeating.

I hope Wikipedia get the balance right, I really do. I hope they don’t make the same mistakes DMOZ did.

Even most Wikipedia plain users have these isterical outbursts. We are all spammers, we all try to self-promote website.

No one can add a non-edu website in the external links section, without being flamed for that, and offcourse, without the page beeing reverted.

I’ve had a LOT of discussions with a lot of users/admins of Wikipedia to even achive to KEEP a Corporate webpage about a corporation such as Symantec.

The dudes are heading towards the DMOZ’s policies more and more.

Funny how that works. Both in DMOZ and in Wikipedia, they have lost balance/common sense/judgment.

Maybe we should just not expect anything from them in the first place. 🙂

Wikipedia gets abused way too much by self promoting assclowns. Wikipedia is NOT A DIRECTORY. All those self promoting fools should realize that they are ruining an encyclopedia that is meant to give information, not links to all sorts of websites, that’s not why people read wiki. I have a tip for those who want to place links though, when they really have something to add to the wiki page, let them write it on the wiki page, that’s the reason people can edit it.

Actually that’s even worse. Trying to add an external link or two into the page content itself, and no in the external links section, will get you banned (and i have concrete cases).
