We’ve all heard that stupid pitch, right?
I was talking with John and he said that he’d received a lot of great feedback about this blog (thanks!) and that there were requests for more articles on ways to make money on the internet.
Righto. No problem 🙂
First of all, I’ll tell you a bit about my background and why I feel (vaguely) qualified to speak on the topic.
Many moons ago, when I left university, I was on the unemployment benefit and playing in bands. I had a huge student debt. I didn’t even own my own computer at the time as I simply couldn’t afford one. So, I used the university computers instead, and had become hooked on something called email, gopher and the www.
Eventually, I got sick of being a broke musician and decided to become a broke computer person instead. I bluffed my way into the computer industry, and started working in IT support. I only knew a little about PC support, but I could talk to people, and I could RTFM, which few other people seemed to be bothered doing. I read all I could get my hands on, and eventually moved up the corporate IT hierarchy, building and administering servers, designing and implementing systems, consulting, contracting, travelling and working around the world…
….and getting thoroughly bored of corporate life!
What I really wanted to do was be my own boss, but it would be a few years before that happened. I shifted careers and went to work for web design companies. When I had a disagreement with my business partners, I was given the chance to leave. Actually, I didn’t have a lot of say in the matter – but leave, I did 🙂
Now, by this stage I’d managed to save a lot, and I’ve always been a keen investor, so I was lucky enough to be in a comfortable position, financially speaking. When people asked me what I was going to do next, I said I’m going to start my own business and earn money off the internet. Neeedless to say, people were somewhat skeptical, especially after I told them I was going to go against sound business wisdom and invest no money whatsoever! After seeing how dot.coms blew through cash, part of me was curious to see if I could bootstrap a business using only a computer and what was in my head.
Three years later, long after the period where most startups have died, I’m still here. I earn a healthy online income, but best of all, I’m my own boss and I choose to do what I want. I love having the freedom to try new things. It is what makes this internet business so much fun.
Am I one of the top earners on the internet? Not even close. There are people on the internet earning six figures every week! There are super-affiliates who work a few hours a day and who bank millions a year! There are search marketers doing just that – right now!
My point is this: there are a lot of empty promisies being made about getting rich quick. I’ve never seen such a thing. What I have seen is talented people, working hard, and getting the rewards they justly deserve.
My second point: making millions from scratch is a big leap, but the first step – earning a living, and gaining financial and personal freedom – isn’t that hard. It is an opportunity open to most of us who have a few internet skills and the ability to learn. It can be done part-time, and with little investment.
That’s what I want to talk about. How to earn a living from the internet. Some of you will hopefully go on to earn millions in the coming few years! Great stuff. Others will gain freedom and independence from 9-5 drugery. You’ve probably got your own personal goals in mind.
So, in the coming few weeks I’ll be looking at genuine ways to make money on the internet. I’ve got nothing to sell, I simply want to pass on what I’ve learned, document the problems I encountered and that you can avoid, and examine the boundless opportunities on the horizon.
Time to give something back.
