I do not actively take Internet marketing consulting jobs, but I do some consulting for older clients and friends. This post is somewhat a response to a conversation I had with a friend today.
One of the biggest problems I see is business owners being half-assed, non-committal pansies.
If you’re an employee of some grossly profitable company, fine – you don’t need to get rich, make a brand for yourself or do anything extraordinary. But if you are a business owner and you are trying to take some market share for yourself, you need to be a fearless leader. You need to be able to make command decisions, possibly risk tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars, and differentiate yourself.
And when I say differentiate yourself, I don’t mean “differentiate yourself with gimmicks”. I mean be a damn leader – do it better than others, do it more professionally and do it with credibility and get the damn job done.
Take web hosting, for example. Every damn day another incompetent hobo host-wannabe enters the web hosting market. Does that mean that web hosting is an oversaturated market that should be avoided?
In fact, the web hosting market – as oversaturated as it is – is begging for a competent, responsive and professional hosting company. Most web hosts offer poor service, unprofessional service, horrible response times with support outsourced to India or some other country where the techs don’t have access to the servers or accounts that they are referencing in support tickets.
In other words, the web hosting market is asking for a leader.
And so many other markets on the Internet are in the same place. If you’re going to run a business, run the damn business! Stop with the pansy-ass whining about not getting any “qualified leads” or “targeted traffic”. There is no “targeted traffic” for pansy-ass incompetent web hosts.
Targeted traffic will come when you fix your business, when you strap on a pair and lay out the cash to make yourself a credible and professional web host. It’s not your marketing that sucks, it’s your business.
You are a pansy and that is reflected in how you run your business. Lead, follow or get out of the way.
